Surviving (and enjoying) your home renovation: 10 tips for a smoother ride!

Renovating your home is your opportunity to transform how you live – designing a space that works for your lifestyle, your family and one that’s truly your own.

It’s an exciting time, but it can also feel overwhelming without the right preparation. No matter the scale of your renovation – whether you’re creating a new open-plan kitchen and living space or undertaking a more extensive transformation throughout your home – success comes from thoughtful planning and a flexible mindset.

Based on our experience of beautiful home renovations, we share some practical tips to help you navigate your project with confidence – and find some time to enjoy the process along the way!

1. Start with a clear vision

A clear plan from the outset will ensure that your design and build team align their work with your expectations. This will reduce the risk of significant changes along the way that will impact your budget.

Allowing yourself plenty of time to make decisions, as well as taking a meticulous approach to planning, will really pay dividends through the renovation process.

We work with our clients to visualise every aspect of their project so that we all have the end goal in our mind’s eye.

2. Know your priorities

Knowing your ‘non-negotiables’ from the outset will help guide your decision making and keep you focused on your budget parameters.

For example, a pantry cupboard may be your ultimate must-have for the kitchen plus under-stairs storage that will transform your family’s hallway – knowing what you can’t live without will really focus your mind (and keep costs on track).

For customers in Dartford, bespoke cabinetry for their under-stairs space was an essential part of their whole home renovation – with two growing teenagers and a golfing Dad, a tidy space to stow shoes and clubs was their must-have!

3. Foster open communication

We know from experience that all successful renovations are built on strong collaboration.

Regular, open communication between the homeowner and the teams involved with the project ensures any issues are addressed and decisions made quickly. It will also give you a sense of control and involvement along the way.

We are used to working alongside building teams and trade professionals to carefully dovetail with them and keep things moving along at the right pace.

It’s also important that you feel you can ask questions or revisit decisions – adjustments are a natural part of every renovation.

4. Time it right – and give yourself some breathing space

If possible, it’s always helpful to plan your renovation during the spring or summer months. Longer daylight hours and better weather can help work progress more smoothly, particularly if structural changes are involved.

It’s also worth considering your own schedule if you’re able to. For example, if you can lighten your work commitments or plan some time away from home during the busiest phases, it can help you maintain your enthusiasm for the project.

5. Plan your storage

With any renovation, it’s preferable to pack away a large proportion of your belongings to keep them safe and protected, as well as clear the way for works to take place.

Planning how and where to store your possessions in advance can save stress and money.

The options might include:

  • Renting professional storage
  • Using spaces in your home such as loft space or a garage
  • Asking friends or family to help (and rewarding them with a party in your new home later!)

How ever you approach your storage – well organised and clearly labelled boxes will save you a lot of time in the long run.

Professional support is available to help with this important part of your renovation. We can thoroughly recommend Home Edited who work across Kent and the surrounding areas, offering support with packing, unpacking and organising your updated home.

6. Declutter before (and while) you pack

Packing up your home is the perfect opportunity to reassess what you truly need and love. Being selective and letting go of things you no longer use (or particularly like) will really help when you come to unpack.

A professional Home Organiser can help guide you through this process and give your home the ‘detox’ it needs – Home Edited also offer their expert support with this.

A more streamlined collection of belongings will enhance the finished result when everything is positioned in your newly designed spaces:

7. Create a functional, temporary kitchen

If your kitchen is being renovated, it helps to plan ahead and decide what you’ll need to manage day to day living.

A makeshift kitchen setup might include:

  • A microwave, kettle and toaster as the essentials
  • A camping stove for simple meals – or an air fryer would also make a versatile option
  • A small fridge

We regularly lend our clients a small plug-in induction hob and/or oven to help their home function comfortably during their renovation.

If you feel that a more comprehensive setup is needed to help you manage life during your renovation, a rented kitchen pod could be an option. They come in a range of sizes, and some include a small dining table.

Importantly, allow yourself the occasional takeaway – convenience (and a well-earned treat) is part of surviving the process.

Plus, you know that, at the end of it, you’ll have a truly beautiful kitchen to come home to.

8. Carve out a calm retreat

Renovations can feel all-consuming, so having a designated space to unwind is invaluable.

Even if it’s just one room, keeping it free from disruption can help maintain a sense of normality and give you somewhere you can close the door on the activity elsewhere.

9. Document the transformation

It’s easy to forget just how far your home has come once the work is complete. Taking photos and videos throughout the process creates a record of the transformation.

As well as your personal memories, this documentation can also be useful for future buyers to showcase the quality and scope of the work carried out.

10. Enjoy the journey

There will of course be moments of disruption, that’s inevitable, but your home renovation is a rare opportunity to reshape your home around your lifestyle and your family.

By keeping organised and trusting your team, you’ll achieve a beautiful result and think back fondly about the journey of getting there – as well as raise a glass to the future!
