A sleek, storage-rich kitchen in Eltham

When Nigel and Sam were introduced to us by friends, they were looking to update their kitchen – both in terms of style and functionality.

They wanted to maximise the storage and create a sleek-looking, easy to maintain kitchen, full of modern conveniences.

Preparation is everything

Sam and Nigel decided to take the opportunity to fully overhaul their kitchen.

We started our preparations by stripping out the old fittings. We blocked up an unwanted window between the kitchen and conservatory, creating a niche for shelving in its place.

Next, we updated all the electrics and plumbing, before redecorating. Only once the area was prepared to our high standards did the kitchen installation begin.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to include extra safety measures in our preparations. We always try to isolate the kitchen from the rest of the house while work is underway and use only the back door. We also took extra precautions to ensure there was no contact between the homeowners and our team.

Designed for storage and convenience

We designed the kitchen with a wrap-around peninsular island. This created a distinct ‘working’ area in the centre, with plenty of space for preparing meals and plating up. There is ample seating for family and friends on the outside, out of the chef’s way.

The peninsula also provides extra storage space, with drawers on the kitchen side and a discreet cupboard installed under the bar overhang.

On the south wall the fridge and freezer sit centrally, with storage either side. We fitted a pantry cupboard to the left, providing plenty of space for food. To the right is a cabinet providing more flexible storage. We installed sockets in three of these units, creating the perfect, discreet place for the hoover and other appliances to be stored and charged.

The room has many nooks and crannies, even more so thanks to the peninsular island. We made the most of all corner spaces by installing easy-access mechanisms. Rubbish and recycling bins are integrated into the cabinets, maintaining the sleek, uncluttered appearance of the room.

All mod cons

A key requirement of this kitchen was to install up-to-date appliances which would make life easy for Sam and Nigel.

We started with a BORA Pure hob, fitting it flush to the peninsula’s worksurface. With its integrated, low noise extractor fan, it was the perfect choice for easy cooking without the disturbance of an overhead fan.

To the north side of the kitchen we fitted two Miele single ovens (model H7260BP), a microwave (M7240TC) and a steam oven (DG7240).

On the opposite wall we installed a full height, integrated Siemens fridge and freezer, providing ample cold storage space.

At the window, a Kohler cast iron sink is fitted with an industrial-style spring tap. Below this, a Siemens dishwasher takes care of any dirty dishes, with a convenient timeLight function projecting the time remaining onto the floor.

Sleek, contemporary style

Responding to Nigel and Sam’s preference for a contemporary style, we recommended light grey, gloss cabinet doors. These give a clean finish and help to bounce light around the room.

We topped these with Alumino Nube Quartz worksurfaces, which are both hardwearing and beautiful.

The white paintwork on the ceiling and walls further enhances the feeling of light and space.

Finishing touches

Open, glass shelving provides extra storage space, while maintaining the airy feel.

We installed a variety of lighting in the room, including:

  • Recessed LED ceiling lights.
  • Feature lighting within the glass shelved aperture and under the breakfast bar.
  • Functional lighting within the pantry cupboard.

Discreet micro switches control the feature lights. This layering of lighting allows Nigel and Sam to adjust the ambience in the room to suit any occasion.

We installed power points into each of the full height cupboards, so devices can be charged and small appliances used within the cupboards.

Happy homeowners

We were delighted to hand this kitchen back to Nigel and Sam, particularly having completed it during the difficult circumstances of lockdown.

Our clients were equally delighted with their new room:

Great design, workmanship and customer service, couldn’t be more thrilled with my new kitchen!
