A beautiful kitchen with hidden depths in Sundridge Park
Practicality was the name of the game when we designed this classic kitchen for Derek and Kathy.
They were looking for a functional space to cook and relax, within their new home extension. High on the list of requirements was plenty of storage, easy maintenance and being a pleasure to use.
Kathy and Derek wanted a traditionally styled kitchen; “unfussy” with simple shapes and clean lines.
Space and storage
When planning the layout of this large room, we wanted to retain the spacious feeling, while still providing plenty of cupboards and drawers.
To achieve this, we planned a bank of full height cabinets along the back of the room and lower, base cupboards to either side.
In the centre of the room we designed a large kitchen island with plenty of food preparation space. This incorporates the hob, more storage and a seating area.
The low level of most of the cabinets and island, plus the inclusion of open shelving, retain the feeling of spaciousness with the oak shelves injecting some colour and vibrancy.
Classic styling
To achieve a traditional look, we fitted in-frame, shaker-style cabinet doors in ash. Derek and Kathy opted for a ‘cock-bead’ frame for subtle detailing.
The exposed brass butt hinges are complemented by the brass cup handles.
Most of the cabinets are painted in Farrow & Ball ‘Old White No.4’. For a bold, striking effect, we finished the island cabinetry in ‘Preference Red No.297’.
Steel grey ‘leathered’ granite worktops complete the design scheme.
Hidden details
The real beauty of this kitchen is what you don’t see, rather than what you do.
There are two sets of double doors in the main bank of cabinets. The one to the left contains a large cupboard pantry, with ample space for storing cooking ingredients. This includes a marble shelf for keeping eggs and dairy products at the perfect temperature. Concealed sockets add to the practicalities of this pantry.
The double doors to the right are a concealed doorway through to the utility room and back door.
The room has a good balance between cupboard and drawer space. Drawers feature bespoke cutlery compartments and peg boards for safe crockery storage. And there’s the obligatory integrated bin for general waste and recycling.
Appliances aplenty
The practicalities of this kitchen extend beyond the storage space. We ensured that Derek and Kathy have top quality appliances to make cooking, and cleaning up afterwards, a dream.
In the full height cabinets a Miele single oven (H 7260 BP) and warming drawer (ESW 7020) are at the perfect height. To the right of them, we fitted an integrated Miele fridge freezer (KFN 37232 iD).
A BORA Pure hob sits flush to the kitchen island worksurface. With their built-in extraction fan, BORA hobs can be fitted anywhere in the kitchen without the need for a noisy, overhead extractor. Perfect for cooks who enjoy chatting to guests while they prepare the meal.
The sink is fitted with a Quooker FLEX tap, providing boiling water. It has a pull-out hose that serves hot, cold and filtered cold water. To the right of the sink, we installed an integrated Miele dishwasher (G 4263 SCVi).
